Students from Beacon of Light School visited the Housing Innovation and Construction Skills Academy (HICSA) during Green Careers Week, gaining hands-on insight into careers that support sustainability and tackle climate change.

The visit is part of the school’s wider approach to learning beyond the classroom, giving students access to real-world environments where they can build confidence, develop practical skills and explore future career options.

At HICSA, Sunderland College’s state-of-the-art training facility for sustainable construction, students met professionals from RE:GEN Group, Northumbria University, Sunderland City Council, University of Sunderland and United Infrastructure.

Recognised as one of just 10 Construction Technical Excellence Colleges in the UK, HICSA delivers industry-standard training in modern construction methods and low-carbon technologies. Through partnerships with Northumbria University and the Gentoo Skills Academy, it offers clear pathways from school to skilled careers in a fast-changing sector.

“I’ve already learned a lot through the Gentoo Trades Academy programme, but visiting HICSA gave me a new perspective on how those skills are used in sustainable construction. It was a great chance to hear from people working in the industry.”
