Kasumi's Journey into Marine Engineering
BackTo mark International Day of Women and Girls in Science, Beacon of Light is celebrating the inspiring journey of Kasumi, a student who is about to begin her studies in engineering at South Shields Marine College.
Kasumi is preparing to enrol on a marine engineering pre-cadetship, a pathway she chose for its strong balance of theoretical learning and practical experience. For her, the opportunity to develop real-world skills alongside academic knowledge was essential in preparing for a future career in the industry.
Her interest in engineering began through her involvement in a marine engineering course with her cadets. This experience gave her first-hand insight into the sector and helped her realise that engineering was a field where she could thrive. She was particularly drawn to the variety of opportunities the profession offers, including the chance to travel and to make a meaningful impact within the industry.
Kasumi knew an engineering pathway was right for her when she recognised her desire for a career that keeps her thinking, involves practical work and allows her to explore opportunities beyond England. Looking ahead, she is excited to learn more about the wider options available after completing her cadetship and where this journey could take her.
As a young woman entering a traditionally male-dominated field, Kasumi is passionate about challenging stereotypes. She believes women are significantly underrepresented in engineering and that bringing more female perspectives into the industry is essential. For Kasumi, closing the gender gap in marine engineering is about ensuring different voices are heard and valued, recognising that diverse ideas can drive progress and innovation.
Her message to other girls considering engineering is simple and powerful: take every opportunity that comes your way, stay motivated and remain determined to achieve your goals.
Kasumi’s story reflects the ambition, confidence and potential of young women in STEM and highlights the importance of creating inclusive pathways that support them to succeed.
