Beacon of Light Students Visit Amazon's NCL1
BackStudents from Beacon of Light School recently visited Amazon’s Gateshead fulfilment centre, NCL1, gaining first-hand experience of the scale, technology, and precision that underpin one of the world’s leading logistics operations.
The visit formed part of the school’s wider commitment to preparing students for future employment by exposing them to real-world workplaces and industry-standard skills.
Upon arrival, the students were welcomed by Amazon staff before beginning a guided tour of the extensive site. The group explored the main sorting floor, an area equivalent to 16 football pitches, and learned how thousands of items are processed each day through advanced automated systems and highly coordinated workflows.
Throughout the tour, students gained insight into the range of roles required to operate a major fulfilment centre. From robotics and engineering to inventory management, quality assurance and customer fulfilment, the visit highlighted the breadth of career routes available within the wider logistics and technology sector. Speaking with Amazon associates gave students a clear understanding of the skills, qualifications and behaviours that employers look for in modern industry settings.
A practical packing activity formed a key part of the day. Students were taught to use the same equipment and techniques used by Amazon staff, developing their accuracy, attention to detail, organisation, and ability to follow processes, transferable skills that are essential in many employment pathways. The hands-on element allowed students to experience the pace and precision required within a professional working environment, while also building their confidence in completing practical tasks to a high standard.
The students were able to take home the boxes they packed, each containing a selection of items such as drinks and Bluetooth speakers. A complimentary lunch later provided an opportunity to reflect on the day’s learning and discuss how the experience connects to their own ambitions and strengths.
Amazon staff praised the group for their excellent behaviour and engagement, noting the thoughtful questions they asked about careers, site operations and new technologies.
Visits such as this are an important part of the school’s careers programme, helping students understand how large organisations operate and what skills are needed to succeed in the modern workforce. By seeing real jobs in action and speaking directly with industry professionals, students gain valuable insight into potential future pathways, motivating them to stay focused, develop key skills and recognise the opportunities available to them beyond school.
The experience offered a memorable and highly valuable look into the world of logistics, giving students a deeper appreciation of the teamwork, technology, and dedication that keep global supply chains running.
