Young people in Alternative Provision have been exploring creative expression, confidence and wellbeing through ETO Lyrics, a songwriting programme that uses music to help young people communicate their thoughts and feelings.

As part of the programme, ETO artists Kema and Nathan visited the Beacon of Light to work with students on writing original lyrics, experimenting with instruments and developing songs together as a band.

ETO Lyrics is designed to give young people a positive creative outlet, helping them express themselves and build confidence through music.

The programme was developed by ETO following a 2021 research digest, Young People’s Mental Health, which explored how music composition and lyric writing can support young people’s emotional wellbeing.

Writing lyrics can give young people a way to process difficult experiences, explore their emotions and create a sense of security. By working together to develop their own music, students can also build connections with others and experience the value of having their ideas heard.

ETO has reported positive outcomes for young people taking part in the programme, including improvements in emotional wellbeing. This highlights the potential of music as a way to support young people alongside their creative development.

The visit to the Beacon of Light provided students with an opportunity to work with practising artists, develop their musical ideas and express themselves in a supportive environment.

Through opportunities such as ETO Lyrics, Laidlaw Schools Trust continues to recognise the importance of supporting young people beyond academic learning, creating opportunities for them to build confidence, develop their interests and improve their wellbeing.
